THE CHANGEOVER IS NORTH OF ALTON VILLAGE ON THE B4143. THE RUNNERS WILL COME DOWN THE ROAD FROM THE NORTH. THE NEW ATHLETES WILL TURN WESTWARDS.

  1. Follow the main track towards the barn. Fork left to pass to the left of it. Follow the track between hedges. Keep the hedge on your left across 3 fields to reach a small gate. Go through, turn right and follow the long edge of this field to another gate, ignoring LH turns. Continue along the same hedge through a further gate and climb over the last rickety gate to enter the caravan park. Bear left through a little gate to the left of a clump of trees and on to the road at giant's head.

  2. Cross the road carefully and go straight into the field opposite. Slant half right down this field to find a gate into the next. Cross this field slightly to the right of the same line to go through a gate into a copse. Straight ahead then curve right and follow the path to a sign by the hedge. Follow the hedge for a few yards then turn left through a gate in the hedge.

  3. Slant slightly right down to a single tree from where you should keep the hedge on your left and follow it round to pick up a track. On reaching a crossing of tracks by some buildings, turn left following the sign.

  4. The lane will bring you to the Dorchester -Sherborne road.CARE! Turn left and run round the corner carefully before the road. After 150 yards, take the first turning on the right signposted 'Up Cerne'. Follow this minor road, which twists, rises and falls to reach Up Cerne village. Pass four cottages on your left and turn right past the shelter.

  5. Follow the farm road up the valley, initially alongside the stream. Pass a cottage on your left. After half a mile turn left uphill at a fingerpost. As the road climbs, it becomes a grassy track.

  6. When you reach a clump of trees at the top of the hill, the track turns left: but you must go straight on ahead across the field. A gap in the hedge leads to where the ridgeway turns left.
  7. Leave the Ridgeway by turning right to find a narrow footpath through the bushes to the changeover in the road 50 yards west of the car park.
